Finding the Right Fit in Women's Shorts
The right pair of shorts should feel as good as it looks. Fit comes down to a few key details — waist, rise, length, and cut — so here's how to zero in on the pair that's right for you.
1. Know Your Waist and Hip Measurement
Measure around your natural waistline and the fullest part of your hips with a soft tape measure, keeping it snug but not tight. Comparing both numbers to a size chart (when available) gives the most accurate starting point.
2. Consider the Rise
The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband. A low rise sits below the natural waist for a relaxed, retro feel. A mid rise sits at or just below the natural waist and suits most body types. A high rise sits at or above the natural waist, offering more tummy coverage and a flattering, structured silhouette.
3. Choose Your Fit Style
- Slim Fit — Fitted through the hip and thigh for a clean, streamlined look.
- Regular Fit — Balanced through the hip and thigh with room to move comfortably.
- Relaxed Fit — Looser and more casual, great for layering or all-day comfort.
4. Think About Inseam Length
Inseam is measured from the crotch to the bottom hem. Shorter inseams (2"–5") create a classic, leg-lengthening look, while longer inseams (7"–9") offer more coverage for a relaxed, everyday feel. Bermuda-length shorts (9"+) lean more tailored and polished.
5. When in Doubt, Fit to Your Hips
If your waist and hip measurements point to two different sizes, size up to the larger of the two — it's easier to adjust with a belt than to size down for extra room through the hip.
